Rumbling Noise

Hi

I have a rumbling noise coming from my Q2, it seems to be more towards the passenger side. Its only when i go over uneven road surfaces and the best way to describe it is, it sounds like a marble in a tupperware box!! I've had it back to Audi twice, first time they said it was stones in the undertray and just a few weeks ago they couldn't find anything at all even after a road test. I had an A1 for 5 years driving on the exact same roads and never had any problems. I'm loathe to go back to Audi a 3rd time, is anyone else experiencing this? Any thoughts appreciated.

Many thanks

Is it actually a rumble or more like a rattle? My Q2 has a rumble from the front end especially around 1800 rpm but is still there when I slip the car into neutral. It is almost a harmonic vibration which I find annoying. I have never owned a front wheel drive before and have not mentioned it to Audi yet as I do not want to appear pedantic. If it were not a brand new car I would suspect a wheel bearing.
Any progress with your problem?

Hi there, I've had it back to Audi 3 times and it's the same every time (stones in the under tray) it's only when the car is moving at around 20-25 miles an hour on uneven roads. It is a rumble not a rattle! Sounds like you have a different problem altogether.

Good luck getting it sorted out.

Thanks for your comments re rumble.
Did Audi offer to remove your undertray to locate the stones? Do you drive on unsealed or stony roads? Is there a sufficient gap around the tray for stones to enter?...I have not actually looked at mine. Have you tried driving into sharp corners, or braking suddenly, to move the suspected stones around? Why does it only happen at particular speeds...does this imply perhaps the stones are caught and are vibrating? It all sounds quite unusual.
If the problem is persisting, have you considered getting another opinion from a different mechanic?
Just some comments...I am intrigued to know the outcome.

Hi, yes they have removed the tray and the stones on all three occasions. I have asked if the tray is faulty as surely the stones shouldn't be able to get in! I haven't seen it but they said that there are no cracks in it and apparently its held in place by 10 bolts! I drive in the town mainly, nowhere near dirtrack or stony roads. Nearly my whole journey to/from work is 20mph so i hear it all the time. It's just been emptied and is quiet at the mo but i have another appt with Audi at the end of the month to see if it comes back. Have said that they need to sort it once and for all if it happens a 4th time, although not sure what my options are. I do have a mechanic who could take a look at it, never thought of that. My friend also has a Q2 and hers doesn't make this noise! I bought this car brand new and this has taken the shine off a bit.

Hi ziggy, Did you actually see them removing the stones from the tray? It just sounds hard to believe, especially when you only drive on conventional roads. How about looking under the car to see if the front of the tray is hanging down and acting as a scoop for stones! I have a long gravel driveway and in dry weather I sometimes hear the gravel being flicked up on to the underside of the car (or maybe the mudguards) but have not been concerned about it as the car is only travelling very slowly...maybe I will develop the same problem!! Persevere and let us know if the noise returns.

Today I asked Audi to test drive my car to see if they could identify my suspected rumble but they could not detect it. Strangely, it is now less obvious so I am trying to find out if they did anything to the car...I left it at the workshop.
