Audi's upcoming compact SUV - previously known as the Q1 - will launch at the Geneva motor show next March, badged as Q2.

The car's name change, revealed by Autocar India, is the result of Audi being able to secure the Q2 and Q4 names from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). Speaking to Autocar India, Audi R&D boss Ulrich Hackenberg said: "the production version will be called the Q2 and the Q1 will come later."

Given that the next model up, the Audi Q3, is only 172.6 inches long, it appears sensible to assume the so-called 'baby' SUV will be even smaller, at around 160 inches long, similar to the Audi A1 Sportback. Spy picture however show a car very nearly the same size as the Q3. As a result it is expected that the Q3 will grow in size on its next incarnation.

That leaves the door open for an even smaller crossover model, based on the A1 supermini, to arrive after the Q2. The Q2 itself will be smaller than the existing Q3, and will be underpinned by VW Group's MQB architecture. Hackenberg also noted the Q1 could be "less than four metres long" when it arrives.
