Buying warranty-worth it?

Post by 2sppandey@gmail.com » Mon Apr 08, 2019 9:02 am

I just put in deposit for a 2018 1.4 petrol, auto, sline (use approved), will get the delivery by weekend.

The car is just an year old so still has two more years warranty left on it. I plan to do about 13000 miles per year. Is it worth buying extra warranty for peace of mind and will the dealer I am buying from give me a better quote or should I wait for two years and buy when the current warranty is about to expire?

whats the best way to go about it. pls advise?

I was always led to believe that car dealer warranties were not worth the paper they are written on, however how wrong I was.
Our other car is an Alpha 2009 Spider and have owned it for 3 years when I bought it it came with a warranty from a company called Warrantwise the one Quinton Wilson promotes, within a couple of months of owning the car my hood would not close properly it's quite complex being an electric jobie, however I took it to an Alpha specialist garage who got it sorted and Warrantywise payed up within days of my invoice reaching them so there not all rogues.

If it's an Audi dealer would imagine they would extend the Audi one for you depends on cost obviously, but we all know Audi's are great when there running but bit of a drain on the pocket when out of warranty if she breaks down.
That said the warranty I had is the first one I have ever had on a second hand car and don't know how much it cost, would I purchase another one? probably not don't do many miles in either car really so would take a gamble.
I had an early Mk2 TT before the Spider, four years old when I bought it kept it for five years and it never missed a beat.
The only thing I shelled out for other than routine maintance was a window regulator and a battery, although you could argue the battery is routine maintenance when it was replaced at eight years old 😂 so the choice is yours.
You don't mention the milage on your new purchase as that also has a bearing on the cost of an exstended warranty, I suppose if your going to keep the car and you can budget for it it would be peace of mind, either way enjoy you new purchase there great cars

Best advice i can give is to buy it NOW and for as long as you can. There are 3 warranty “types”... Normal 3yr, 1 or 2 years extended for the 4th & 5th year, and then Audi used approved warranty. And even then the extra 4th and 5th year warranty is different if bought from new opposed to the warranty being bought near your 4th year. The added extended warranty has added complications like mileage and excess fees. I had an A3 and extended the warranty when the car was 3yrs old, and i extended it for an extra 2yrs, thus covering the yrs 4 and 5, the warranty WASNT transferable to a new owner. It is tied to that owner and the car together. If the warranty is bought for 5yrs at the point of buying the car new, then the warranty IS transferable.

Also, you may want to see my following post on another forum. It shows you the amount of faf that I had to go through to get an extended warranty and the cost. Read it to the end to see the amount of ridiculousness the Audi system is.

Edit: I should have read your post more clearly! your not buying new? then you cant buy the extended warranty until the existing 3yrs is in the last month of validity. No dealer will help you as you cannot extended unless when buying new or at the last month. Are you buying from an Audi Dealer? if you are then ask them to give you the date of when the warranty is due for renewal.

Also, the dealer WILL NOT give you a better quote. It is all done online via machines. No calls to Audi support or whatever will help. This is the only way.

The way i see it, and the only real option you have, is to wait until the existing warranty is out and then buy 1 more year extended warranty. you will get the options that are best for you when you go online for a quote here:

Thanks for the detailed info. Yes I am buying a used approved Q2 from an Audi Dealer but then if its going to be the same price as buying (if at all) by the time my current 3yr warranty which expires in apr 2021 then no point shelling that money out right now. As it is I have gone over budget to get the car!!

You should be fine. It all depends on how long you plan to keep your car. If it's up to 5yrs old then you will be ok as you have the option of 4th and 5th year as extended warranty yrs. After the 5th year we are all on our own! Unfortunately, you don't really have much choice in the matter as you are buying 2nd hand. the 4 or 5yr warranty from new has to be bought when you buy the car from new. You are now looking at a car with just the basic 3yr warranty which means you will need the extended warranty cover. Its a bit more pricey than buying new and the terms&conditions are a bit different but that's all you can do. Either that or buy new and spec it as you wish.
