Personally if I had to top it up I would use the same grade. Incidentally Audi recommends Castrol Edge Professional for your car which is 5w30.

Apparently dealerships have been told to change to 0W20 due to frothing issues. That's what I was told earlier in the year when I queried it on my service invoice.

The lower digit number of the Multigrade oil indicates the oil's cold temperature/cold start performance. The upper digit indicates the viscosity (~ Thickness / Flow ability) of that oil at 100 degrees centigrade.

Therefore, both grades of oil will have the same cold temperature performance, however, the W30 grade will be thicker at 100 degC.

Personally, I would have no issues with mixing the 0W30 with 0W20, provided both oils meet the Audi/VAG recommended spec.

Thanks for replying .I will use the 0W 30 shell helix ultra for top up if required didn't want to damage the engine . Interesting the reason the dealerships have changed the specification. Alan.

I can't say for certain that all engines are affected. It may only be the 1.0 like mine. And, again, it could be a low mileage issue as I had only done 12,000 at the two year mark.

Interestingly, the oil weight wasn't actually on the invoice. I only asked what they had used to ensure that it was 0w30 and not 5W30. Then the chap explained that it was neither!

I previously had a new Q2 sport 1.4 then got a new 1.4 edition 1 they both came with 0W 30 oil .Just had it serviced at chelmsford Audi dealership 12800 miles two years old first service. They changed the oil from shell helix ultra professional 0W 30 to 0W 20 are all the dealerships doing this.
