Bigger wheels need arch extensions?

So I was reading the review in Car Magazine and noticed this little nugget of information:

The 19s you can spec are likely best left to the aesthetically obsessed; these are so big you actually get little extensions to the wheel arches to keep them legal.

What do these extensions look like? And does this mean for aftermarket purchases we also need to buy the arch extensions?

I am honestly not sure what the difference in terms of looks would be here. I can't imagine it making a huge difference in the overall appearance. I would imagine the aftermarket value wouldn't drop anymore than it usually does.

And why would a larger diameter wheel need arch extensions, surely that's only if they are wider?
